Connect rate vs answer rate: stop reporting them as one number

They move for different reasons, and conflating them hides the exact problem you're trying to diagnose.

Vapia Research · Analytics team · May 19, 2026 · 4 min read

Answer rate measures whether the line was picked up. Connect rate measures whether a real conversation started. When the two diverge, the gap is the diagnosis.

Reading the gap

  • Answer up, connect flat: your numbers are reaching people who hang up immediately — usually a reputation or list-quality issue
  • Answer down, connect ratio stable: a timing or coverage problem, not a messaging one
  • Both down together: check carrier-level delivery before you touch the script

Reporting one blended number makes all three look identical. Split them, trend them side by side, and most contact-rate investigations get considerably shorter.
